Fox has given a Season 2 renewal to its crime series Murder in a Small Town starring Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk.

The Canadian-made series, produced by Sepia Films in association with Fox Entertainment and Future Shack Entertainment, is based on the Edgar Award-winning, nine-book Karl Alberg series. Four to five of the Alberg novels were used in the first season, with three or four left for Season 2.

Murder in a Small Town falls under Fox’s cost-effective international content strategy.

“We look forward to giving fans a second season of Karl Alberg’s unmatched expertise as a crime solver in Murder in a Small Town,” Brooke Bowman, EVP of Drama Programming & Development, Fox Television Network, said. “We’ve enjoyed a terrific partnership with Sepia and Future Shack and our incredibly talented cast and crew and can’t wait to see what’s in store for our characters next season.”

The series has an appealing price tag for Fox, believed to be under $1M an episode for a network-quality drama, while delivering solid audiences. (Murder in a Small Town ranks among the Top 3 Fox shows on Hulu this season, with the pilot episode garnering 11 million viewers to date across platforms.)

The series is part of Future Shack Entertainment’s international co-production model under CEO Jeff Wachtel. It is been distributed by ITV Studios.

“We couldn’t be more excited about our continued relationship with our terrific partners at Fox and Sepia,” Wachtel said. “In addition to the validation as a creative and popular success, getting a second season pickup confirms that Future Shack’s international model can create high-quality and cost-effective series.”

Murder in a Small Town, whose eight-episode first season ended its Fox run in November, follows Karl Alberg (Sutherland), who moves to a quiet, coastal town to soothe a psyche that has been battered by big-city police work. He quickly learns that this gentle paradise has more than its share of secrets, and he will need to call upon all the skills that made him a world-class detective in solving the murders that, even in this seemingly idyllic setting, continue to wash up on his shore.

The series, which has ties to Rossif Sutherland’s late father Donald, is produced in British Columbia, with Ian Weir (Arctic Air, Edgemont) serving as head writer/executive producer, and Nick Orchard (Soapbox Productions), Morris Ruskin and Sharon Wisnia (Mojo Global Arts) and Jon Cotton also serving as executive producers.
